Employee Appraisal Performance: An appraisal is kind of report made by a qualified person setting forth an opinion or estimate of value. It also refers to the process by which this estimate is obtained. An employee appraisal is communication device to support and enhance each individual’s contribution in an organization. It is a review of an employee’s performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Its aim is to measure the skills and accomplishments of an employee with reasonable accuracy and uniformity so that the areas of performance enhancement can be identified in order to promote professional growth. There should be proper channels of communication throughout the year to build effective working relationships. The appraisal results in many organizations are used, either directly or indirectly, to help determine reward outcomes. The appraisal results are used to recognize the better performing employees who should get the majority of available merit pay increases, bonuses, and promotions. In the same way, they also help to identify the poorer performers who may require some form of counseling, or in extreme cases, demotion, dismissal or decreases in pay. The appraisal should be obtained of an employee based on his/her job performance and not on the personality characteristics. The Supervisor’s goal should be in writing unbiased comments for the constructive and objective appraisal of his subordinate. An ideal review stimulates the employee’s interest and improves the job performance. It is a formal feedback mechanism on an annual basis but is very uncertain and contentious matter.

Employee Appraisal Form: The employee appraisal form helps to initiate a productive conversation with the employee. The employee performance appraisal form can be designed based on the needs of the organization considering the relevant rating scales to measure. Some forms are objective and some are narrative for describing the performance over the past year, goals for the coming year, professional improvement plans etc. There are certain important points to consider while designing the employee appraisal form. It should be common to all employees of a specific job category. It is better if the Manager interacts with the Human Resource Department in selecting the right form. This form should be retained in the employee records. In case of employee self-appraisal, a discussion of that form in the review conversation must be included.

Employee Self-Appraisal: The Employee self-appraisal provides an opportunity to contribute significantly to improve self performance and the working relationships with the supervisor.  It gives an opportunity for the employee and the supervisor to look back over the past and plan for the future. It also encourages the employee to be proud of his accomplishments and candid about his weaknesses.
