Amsterdam - The venue of the Cannabis Cup: For the past 30 years now, Amsterdam has been the Mecca of pot smokers and seed buyers, and the official venue for the Cannabis Cup. The city has many cannabis coffee shops from where people can get excellent high quality supplies at a very reasonable price. However, there is a restriction from the government over smoking of marijuana in public, therefore, in order to smoke legally, the tourists either have to use their lodging quarters or authorized cannabis coffee shops.
The Cannabis Cup also includes the High Times Cup tours, which take its guests around to introduce them to the city’s finest cannabis coffee shop bars in Amsterdam. The tour brochures claim that the each of the two-dozen coffee shops on the tour has a distinct ambience, offering a unique taste. Thus, it is suggested that you sit down and enjoy a drink and a smoke, and savor the ambience of Amsterdam and the Cannabis Cup.
Cannabis Cup and High Times: High Times has been hosting one of the coolest festivals of the world, the annual High Times Cannabis Cup that celebrates the spirit of the harvesting of cannabis. For cannabis connoisseurs, the High Times Cannabis Cup is not only a celebration of the harvest, but also a weeklong event full of enjoyment through music seminars and the popular cannabis coffee shop bar tour.
There is a huge rush to get the passes for participating or for being a judge, and hence the registration begins well before the event starts. Being a judge is considered to be a matter of honor, and the judge’s pass bought at the venue entrance costs 200 Euros in cash. A Cannabis Cup judge’s pass is a special authorization, which allows admission to most ceremonies, concerts and seminars, plus a three day long bus tour of the Amsterdam coffee shop bars, and an event T-Shirt and program guide. And, of course, it includes voting for the best strains of Marijuana by consuming it and giving honorary comments on each.
History of the High Times Cannabis Cup: The year 2007 will see the exciting twentieth High Times Cannabis Cup festival. The past nineteen festivals have been high on excitement, with each festival getting more people participating than the previous one. The first festival saw only three judges and four contestants. However, by the 7th festival, the Cannabis Cup had become a worldwide media event, and as a result of its wide publicity the 8th festival attracted more than 1500 judges, included the tour of 21 coffee shop bars, international entries from U.S., Canada and Switzerland, and 5 seed banks.
The history behind the starting of the High Times Cannabis Cup is very interesting. The founder, Steven Hagar, had come to the Netherlands in 1987 to interview Nevil, who was the founder of the first Dutch cannabis seed company. Steven was very impressed by Nevil, who lived in a mansion that had grow rooms for breeding cannabis seeds, and decided to host an annual event to celebrate the harvest of cannabis. Although marijuana smoking is decriminalized in Amsterdam, there are many rules and regulations governing the cannabis industry, which if broken, may get the smoker heavily penalized or even result in imprisonment. The High Times Cannabis Cup event was, in fact, started to fight against the laws made for restricting the open use of cannabis.
