Edwards Cinema, California: After building a chain of cinema theaters around Los Angeles between 1930 and 1960, James Edwards II shifted to Newport Beach, California. The original Edwards Cinema was closed down in 2000 due to bankruptcy. The remaining theaters have now become part of the Regal Entertainment Group. Among some of the best-known Edwards Cinemas in California are Edwards Big Newport, the Regency Lido, the Edwards Irvine, Edwards Fresno Stadium 21 & IMAX on Paseo Del Centro, Edwards Mira Mesa 7, Camino Ruiz, Edwards Temecula Stadium 15, Winchester Road and Edwards San Marcos Stadium Cinema, San Marcos Boulevard.

Edwards Big Newport started screening in 1969 and had a 71-foot screen. It was the fourth theater of the Edwards Cinema, California chain. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, they added two smaller screens to either side of the building, not changing the original auditorium.

Edwards Movie Theatres 21 Megaplex is located at the Irvine Spectrum Center. It has been renovated, adding stadium seating, digital sound and hygienic cloakrooms. It is in the vicinity of some of the best shops, restaurants and clubs, including an Improve Comedy Club.

The Regency Lido Theatre, Newport Beach, began screening in 1938. The Lido seats 622 and still has the original poster cases and the tiny box office outside the theatre located under the Grand Marquee. The Lido still sells manually dispensed real tickets and not the computer generated ones. The interior has period movie art and black light illumination on the wall paintings. The Lido is also known for its premieres of skateboarding and skating films. On weekends, Jim Woodin, a noted announcer and restaurant critic, introduces the shows, sharing trivia and anecdotes.
