Dog hair loss: Hair loss in dogs is quite a common problem in the vet dermatology. Most dog lovers choose their dog on the basis of their appearance and when the dog starts loosing its furry coat it is an obvious cause of great concern. The primary thing that first needs to be diagnosed is whether the dog is scratching out its own fur or whether is it falling off by itself. If the dog is scratching the hair off then there are several underlying causes that is sparking this reaction in it. This requires careful investigation and diagnosis. Some of the main causes that are behind hair loss are various skin infections, allergies and parasites. You should also take care to see that which areas are suffering from hair loss. Is it from the areas where he is scratching or other areas? This would show that the hair is probably falling out.
Causes of dog hair loss: Hair might be falling in several patches and it might be due to bacterial infection of the skin. This is known as pyoderma. There are many other reasons for example dermatophytosis and this is a fungal infection. Hair loss in dogs can also be due to the fact that Demodex mites might attack it. These attack the hair follicles and the increase in their number leads to a further loss of hair that is unnatural. This disease is known as the demodicosis. Demodicosis is also known as the Red Mange and it is the over population that causes the trouble not otherwise. The disease may range from a mild irritation and hair loss on small patches of skin or even severe inflammation. The skin may become red with dry flaky skin, pustules accompanied with severe loss of hair. Another major disease is the sarcoptic mange or the canine scabies. Dogs are the natural hosts of this disease and it causes severe itching. The first crusting appears on the ears and the elbows and the only treatment is isolating the dog from the others.
Treatment: The best way would be to take the dog to the vet before things go out of hand. Your vet knows your pet even more than what you do and he will also provide with the necessary treatments.
Tail ailments: Dogs may suffer from certain tail ailments like the tail skin might be flaky or even itchy and there might be red patches or even bald spots. There is a gland at the top of the tail and some dogs loose hair along this part. Thus mites, flea allergy, infestation and anal sac irritations should be cured at all costs.
