Alligator gar- the biggest of Garpikes: The alligator gar is the biggest of the Garpike species and is often referred to as Gator gar. They are found in the Mississippi river, from southwest Ohio to southern Illinois in USA and south of the Gulf of Mexico to Veracruz, Mexico. Alligator gars, the biggest of the Garpikes, have been found in ten different states of the United States, namely Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina.
An adult alligator gar weighs around 100 lbs. However, it could reach 300 lbs and a length of ten feet, weighing over three hundred pounds. The bow hunters of the southern United States hunt them extensively. The scales of an alligator gar are known as ganoid scales and are hard and shiny. The dual row of sharp teeth distinguishes alligator gar from other gars. Alligator gar inhabits the pools and backwaters of large rivers, swamps and lakes. Though fish is considered to be their staple diet, alligator gars also eat crustaceans and waterfowl.
One of the biggest Alligators in the world: The American alligator or the Alligator mississippiensis is the largest reptile and one of the biggest alligators in the world. It is seen in the coastal swamps of South and North Carolina, southern Florida and length of the Gulf Coast to the mouth of the Rio Grande. Owing to the demand for the alligator’s thick hide, they have become prized catches for hunters. In addition to this, the skin was used for making purses, bags and jackets, till the law banned the hunting of alligators in 1970.
The weight of an American alligator in accordance to its length could vary. An American alligator could be 12 feet 3 inches, weighing 591 pounds, while another could measure 12 feet 1 inch and weigh 460 pounds.
The biggest alligator ever in Florida: The growth of an alligator depends on the availability of food and temperature. Alligators grow at a faster rate where food is easily available in abundance, like in Louisiana. The biggest alligator recorded in Florida was said to be 17 feet 5 inches long or 5.3 meters. Alligators eat insects, crabs, crayfish, fish, frogs, snails, turtles, snakes, grebes, raccoons and wading birds and even dead animals. They are a definite threat to human beings. They are cold blooded, which means that their body temperature would fluctuate with a change in the atmospheric temperature. They can survive in water temperatures as cold as 2 degrees Celsius and as warm as 38 degree Celsius.
Biggest alligator record: The world’s biggest alligator on record is 19 feet 2 inches or 5.8 meters long and was traced on Marsh Island, Louisiana. The American alligator, found along the Gulf coast is considered to be one of the biggest alligators. More than a million alligators are estimated to be native to Florida. The heaviest alligator on record weighed 473 kilograms or 1,043 lbs. It was found in Gainesville, Florida. The biggest alligator recorded in South Carolina was 13 feet 1 inch. A poacher killed it more than a decade ago in Sparkleberry Swamp and it is now exhibited at the S.C. State Museum in Columbia. The records on alligators help us to understand the amphibians better and identify their natural habitat.
