Formulas for the Conversion of Temperature: There are formulas that have been derived to covert the units of measurement for temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius to Kelvin. The equations are as follows: for Fahrenheit to Celsius, it is (F-32)*5/9 and from Celsius to Kelvin it is (F-32) * 5/9 + 273.15. The next is from Celsius to Fahrenheit, which is (C * 9/5) + 32, and from Celsius to Kelvin it is C + 273.15. And the temperature conversion formulas from Kelvin to Celsius is K – 273.15 and from Kelvin to Fahrenheit is (K - 273.15) * 9/5 + 32. There are also a number of online calculators that are available which help to convert the temperature into various scales. These calculators make it easy and one can avoid the hassle of remembering the math. There are java programs that are available online which provide assistance in the conversion of temperature.

Conversion of Temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit: Zero Fahrenheit was introduced by the German born scientist, Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit, who also invented the mercury thermometer and its scale in 1714 in Holland. And, the Swedish astronomer, Anders Celsius, introduced his scale in 1742. The Celsius scale, which is used all over the world, uses the metric system to measure temperature. However, temperatures are still measured on the Fahrenheit scale in the US.

According to the Celsius scale, water freezes at 0o Celsius and boils at 100o Celsius, which is a difference of 100o. And according to the Fahrenheit scale, water freezes at 32o Fahrenheit and boils at 212o Fahrenheit, which is a difference of 180o. Therefore, each degree on the Celsius scale is equal to 180/100 or 9/5 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale.

How to convert Celsius temperatures to Fahrenheit

  • Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5.
  • Add 32o to adjust for the offset in the Fahrenheit scale.
  • Example: To convert 37o C to Fahrenheit. 37 * 9/5 = 333/5 = 66.6 66.6 + 32 = 98.6o F
There is a mental math method that can be used to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit: The ratio of 9/5 is equal to 1.8 and 1.8 is equivalent to 2 - 0.2.

Here is how to convert Celsius temperatures to Fahrenheit with mental math
  • Double the Celsius temperature (multiply by 2).
  • Take 1/10 of this number (2 * 1/10 = 0.2) and subtract it from the number above.
  • Add 32o to adjust for the offset in the Fahrenheit scale.
  • Example: To convert 37o C to Fahrenheit. 37 * 2 = 74 74 * 1/10 = 7.4 74 - 7.4 = 66.6 66.6 + 32 = 98.6o F
