Texas Caviar Dips: Recipes and Ingredients

Texas Caviar – Black Eyed Peas Recipe: The term Texas Caviar refers to the warm richness of a thick dip. However, it is more like a Mexican Hummus, filled with chilis, cumin, onions and cilantro. Ideally, Texas caviar should be served with tortilla chips. For the flavors to blend perfectly, this dip should be made at least two or three days in advance. There are several different variations and recipes to make the special Texas Caviar. Here is one mouthwatering, delicious recipe, called the Black Eyed Peas recipe:

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix 1 ½ chopped tomatoes, ¼ cup sliced green onions, 2 tablespoons green chilies, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 1-tablespoon Serrano chili pepper or minced jalapenos, 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, 1-teaspoon olive oil, ½ a teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 2 cloves of garlic, minced and 15 ounces of drained black eyed peas.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and cover the mixture.
  • Keep it in the refrigerator for two or three days for the flavors to blend.
  • While serving, garnish the dip with fresh cilantro leaves and serve with tortilla chips.
The Black Eyed Peas dip is an all time favorite, at every party or function.

Texas Caviar Dip: The Texas Caviar with Avocado dip is a yummy party dip that contains tomatoes, lots of diced avocados, beans and onions. It is one of the several variations to the Texas Caviar and it is addictive. This dip should be served with ‘scoop’ tortilla chips. For a large quantity, here is the recipe for Texas Caviar with Avocado:
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix about 15 ounces of drained and rinsed black-eyed peas, 2 chopped tomatoes, 1 medium sized finely chopped sweet onion, ½ cup chopped jalapeno peppers, 8 ounces of Italian dressing and some cayenne pepper.
  • Stir these contents along with 2 peeled and pitted and chopped avocadoes.
  • Serve immediately.
This recipe makes about 32 servings and takes about 15 minutes to make.

Ingredients used in the Texas Caviar recipe: The main ingredient used in any Texas Caviar recipe is of course the black-eyed peas. Here is a recipe for Texas Caviar dip:

Ingredients:
  • 2 cans of black eyed peas
  • 1 can of drained white hominy
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 green chopped onions
  • 2 minced cloves of garlic
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 1 chopped jalapeno pepper
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 8 ounces of fluid Italian salad dressing
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes and green chilies
Procedure:
  • Mix all the ingredients carefully, except the Italian salad dressing.
  • Mix the Italian salad dressing with the tomatoes and green chilies and pour the contents over the black-eyed pea mixture.
  • Cover the mixture and refrigerate.
  • Add some salt and pepper for taste.
This recipe serves ten portions. What’s more, you can also add some more green chilies and jalapenos if you wish to. Not only does the Texas caviar make a delicious dip, it also makes a wonderful gift item!
